Is the iPad really magical?

The iPad revolutionized the market in its own fashion with it’s anticipated launch few months ago. I saw a lot of criticism, disappointment, delight, and a whole lot of other mixed reviews for the device. I watched the keynote speech online on the launch day and to tell you the truth I was disappointed too, to see a giant iPod touch as an “in between” product between a Macbook and an iPhone.

So couple of weeks ago post its store launch, I went down to the closest apple store here in Boston. I was amazed at the number of people in the store getting their hands on one of these and playing around. I spent about 45 minutes in the store with the iPad, trying every application, games etc to get a feel of what the product is like, is it really worth it, is it that powerful enough to replace a netbook? So here is my personal review of the iPad…

Whats Good

The best thing about the iPad is the iBooks app! I’ve seen the Kindle, I’ve seen Nook and the Sony eReader. iBooks is the winner! Its functionality, UI, just the way it works is brilliant. Though I’m not a big fan of eBooks myself, since I like the feel of paper.

Whats NOT

Glossy screen – its one complain that I have for my macbook too, the matte screens were so much better!
Its difficult to hold it in one hand and work with it, in short its a little too big!
Typing is not fun, though its intuitive which in technical terms is very impressive. However, your fingers tend to slip from the screen, if you want to type the usual way in the landscape mode. It worked well with the iPhone and the iPod Touch, since god created man with opposable thumbs!
For a so called “netbook” killer, it has no USB ports, no memory card slots etc.

I recently came across Robert Scoble’s post on how Apple sold more iPads than they predicted and why they got their prediction wrong. The Apps make the product so much better, and there are killer apps for the iPad out there! It wasn’t a surprise to see Amazon’s Kindle app hitting iTunes store either! Justifying the blood, sweat and tears they’ve put in to digitize so many titles, its only fair!

It will be interesting to see what kind of consumers are buying this product. Whether offering it to new students at university is a good idea or not….or there will be more elderly citizens like the 99 year old lady with the ipad, we will have to wait and watch!

Droid Does, or does it?

We’ve all seen the promos of the new Motorola Android 2.0 based phone called Droid..No?

Ok here you go!

So, Yeah! A direct hit at Apple’s iPhone, which according to me is not the ultimate device, but yeah has the coolest UI (User Interface) ever built!

So my question is, what is it that you would expect form cellphone? You need to make and receive calls right? Texting? Maybe a little web browsing won’t hurt, a little push email service. What if I get lost, I need my Google Maps? Games for my passtime! I need the weather, New England forecast cannot be trusted, they said yesterday its gonna snow on Thursday, now they are saying its gonna snow on Friday, so a weather widget or something! And there will be a gazillion other features which you might not even use!

So coming to Droid, interesting phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, touch screen blah blah blah…

So, personally I find these companies trying too hard to convince people to not buy the iPhone and go for their bulkier, overloaded with features phones!

While I was in New Delhi, India last week trying my best to pack stuff for my move to Boston for a Masters program, I came across many perspectives on the USA and Marketing.

“Marketing in USA!! Well thats just awesome!! That’s what the country does best!” said a friendly voice. I was like “uh haan” “Well, think about it, the country markets itself so well that you see its name almost everywhere! Tell me something Ketan, when u watch the news, do u ever come to know about the markets in…lets say France, or Russia……NO! If you are going to America to learn marketing…you are going to the right place!” Its interesting to know.

I came to Boston on the 26th and its been about 5 days since then, and I’m still trying to adjust to air, water, and of course, the time! Its not my first in the USA, but this is so different from the last time. Now I have a focus, a major point of interest and thats marketing!

I’ve been around the different areas and noticed one thing…no change in the number of people who come to the malls, who shop…of course this is just a different perspective, an opinion…you have the right to disagree with it and may be unsubscribe to the atrocities of this blog. Anyways….so yeah hoards of people flowing into the mall and there is no god damn place to park! And get this…it was raining and there was a weekend flood warning in the state of Massachusetts, though if I was out of my house, then I cant expect others to stay in! So its 29th of August 2009, its raining, the malls are as jam packed as 3 years back when I visited the country and they say the country is in fucking RECESSION!

Apple just announced the launch of its new OS Snow Leopard, which was on sale for $29 post 28th August 2009, thus the packed Apple store!

I dont feel I’m going haywire with this post, its deeper than you think…..trust me…think about it! And I’m not done yet!

So next day…I went to Walmart, a store that everybody loves as it has so many multiple brands under one roof and a little cheap. So if you like the idea of shopping… nothing in particular… just shopping or if you have time to kill, lots of it, it could be the best place for you to shop at! I remember, I was with my cousins and we had planned what we needed to buy and it took us an hour easily! If it were just me, I don’t think I would have got out of the store, alive….

So what did we learn today? Nothing really…

Is old age affecting Simpu Singh?

Our very own Simpu Singh Sodhi changed his look on Facebook to a more suggestive not so family oriented photo with no clothes except a ‘chaddi’ and a hawaian flower on his ‘padgi’!

So what the hell is up with him? His profile was stormed with ‘Horny Simpu Sir’ comments all over!

So my question to you is that Is Old Age Affecting Simpu Singh?

According to his claims, his wife ‘Mona Darling’ has eloped with Pankazz from ‘ask the pankazz’. If you ask me, with the looks of his claims, Lion King is surely looking for this chap!
Simpu Sir is on a mission to steal all the ‘zokes’ from the zoke books available in the market and is posting them on his profile so that his 1000 odd fans can read the ‘zoke’ that everybody knows. Lets face it, even though he is adorable, his days of originality are over!
Being ridiculed over his ‘semi-nude-horny’ picture he was found lamenting and asking the world whether they think if he is a miser or not.
Last but not the least, being a sardar, Simpu Singh is also cracking sardar jokes on Facebook. No Comments!

Nonethless Simpu Sir, we still like you for what you are! Just be original!

If you guys remember ‘Ask tha Pankazz’, he claims that Pankazz has run away with his wife or vice versa!!

Are we moving on to different social media with time?

The answer is …Probably.

I still remember my undergrad days..where we used Yahoo Groups alot to communicate! It was something that we needed at that time so that we could put updates of our upcomin assigments, pass on important messages, having weird discussions! It was high in utility and less time was wasted….since the group was public, spammers drove us out…

By then we were all registered users of Orkut and created a similar group for our functional purposes.

Orkut caused a revelation amongst us, with scraps, testimonials, messages…and what not…I still remember one of my friends was on a mission to get as many scraps as he could…we used to call him Scrappy Doo…lame..but relevant! Of course the sentence “I want to make frandship with you’ was coined on the scrapbooks of orkut as predators were looking to find some flesh over the net through this portal! Nothing really could beat Orkut….sites came up….went down…are still trying to co-exist!

Orkut was a good way to reach out to the friends, who you’ve not spoken to in years….there is a debate on this though…People believe that if they really wanted to keep in touch with ppl…they would…they can just call…why is there a need for social media? Any answers?

Facebook came in with it’s swanky look and just swept a major portion of the traffic….the ‘cool’ ones were on facebook….the ‘uncool’ downmarket ones wanted to be cool…so they got aboard! Aah..I slowly noticed at least from my cirle of friends, People started using Facebook mainly because of it’s privacy options….which meant no more random ‘frandship’ requests!

Twitter with its mundane idea of ‘what are you doing’ is slowly catching up…infact i’m addicted to it!

I see a lot of people moving on from one social networking site to other…and maybe never looking back!

How to get your GYM customers back

So you own and run a Gym, swanky place with latest equiptment, awesome trainers, located in a posh locality…priced high but lower than the most expensive one in that area….

You are wondering whats the problem? Well you aren’t getting repeat customers! Follow these steps and you will surely get them back….

1. The process actually starts from the day they join, they should feel confortable around you and should be able to trust you….now thats serious

2. just like days before their membership ends….talk to them about renewing and new offers and stuff, try and give them some discount….

3. Call them…..

4. Call them twice in a week…

5. Call them thrice in a week…

6. Call them on Sundays..when they jsut being lazy…

7. If you bump into them…and they recognize you…tell them how unfit they’ve become..tell them they’ve put on some weight…that’ll do tha trick…

8. Call them 7 days a week…

What are you doing and whats on your mind…

Aah well! It’s been long since I patiently sat down in front of my comp and wrote a blog entry that made sense. Today I look back at those 60 odd poems I wrote and I kinda laugh, wondering what was on my mind?

This is about What Are You Doing? and What’s On Your Mind?….Yes! its about Twitter and Facebook!

I started Facebooking when one fine day few years ago I received an Invitation and I was like…”hmmm…” and today I have around 400 odd friends (I really dont count) out of which few are some people who I haven’t even met in my life! Mark Zuckerberg, the creator of Facebook is I guess correct in saying that it isnt about connecting with people you’ve met in real life….there is a lot more to it right here!

So Facebook is not just about ‘What’s on your mind?’ as mentioned in a social media summit that I attended today, it is about engaging the audience into something. Which is interesting…..

People are hating the new Facebook and like Mark, I too couldn’t care less!

Lets face it, people are hating the new layout, but they are not boycotting the site, they are not NOT using the network, they are still adding friends, they are trying to get used to the new Facebook! Hypocrisy…..and social media just go hand in hand!

Twitter was an interesting find, had read about it being a rave in the US and just logged on and registered years back! At first I found it really stupid…It is now that I’ve started using Twitter, not so much but yeah…somewhat…

What are you doing is the simple question that Twitter asks…..which is interesting….I’m still exploring!
